Homeworkers living in rural areas of the UK are likely to benefit from plans for a major government investment in broadband.
The government is set to spend around £530 million on enhancing Britain’s broadband services. Wales is likely to receive around £56.9 million of this, in order to deliver superfast broadband to 90 per cent of premises. Meanwhile, everyone will be given access to speeds of at least 2Mbps.
Homeworkers are likely to find access to good broadband speeds particularly important for their business and while two-thirds will be served by private sector broadband installation, the government is investing funding in order to make it an option for businesses in the final third as well.
Jeremy Hunt, secretary of state for culture, the Olympics, media and sport, commented: “Superfast broadband is essential if businesses are to grow and create new jobs. It is increasingly important for the way we deliver public services and to our everyday lives.
“But some areas of the UK are being left behind. Many rural and hard-to-reach communities do not have decent broadband access. We must ensure the whole country can join the digital age.
Cheryl Gillan, secretary of state for Wales, stated that she is “delighted” with the news. Ms Gillan added that boosting economic growth in Wales is a top priority.
