Finding a job which allows them to work from home could help mothers who are struggling with childcare costs.
Women are increasingly finding themselves priced out of the job market, due to public sector cuts and lower levels of state funding for childcare. This is according to recent research from the Institute of Public Policy Research (IPPR), which claimed that more and more women are leaving work to stay at home and care for their children.
A decline in real wages and drops in the level of financial help available for childcare means that many women are simply better off not working than going out to a job each day and paying for childcare.
Dalia Ben-Galim, associate director at the IPPR, commented: “Cuts to childcare tax credits mean that for some women, work no longer pays and they are better off staying at home.
“The squeeze … means that it may be more economical for parents – and in particular mothers who are often paid less – to leave the labour market. This not only has an impact on women's long-term career prospects, but can also have an impact on children."
