Working from home and having an extra half hour in bed has long been an appealing concept.
There is no need to battle through the public transport system each morning or sit stuck in traffic as time ticks by. But the nature of our working practice could prompt an increasing number of people to look into working from home as commutes become almost unbearable.
The US in particular is experiencing a progression towards longer and longer commutes as the recession forces people to travel for any job they can find.
A recent report from the BBC found that almost one in three people in Southern Maryland commutes for over an hour to get to their place of work, making it the fastest growing state in this category in the past ten years.
Unfortunately, the problem doesn't appear to be letting up and the proportion of people leaving the house before 06:00am has risen from 8.9 per cent to 12.6 per cent over the past two decades, while those leaving the house at the more reasonable time of between 06:30am and 08:00 has fallen.
People keen to avoid the pressure and stress of a long commute could find that working from home offers a far more relaxed and flexible lifestyle that is well worth considering.
