Surrey looks to be a haven for homeworkers having come out on top of a recent survey of home offices.
Conducted by Smart Growth Analytics, the 2012 Home Office Survey revealed that Surrey has some 27,000 home offices, which account for almost five per cent of total employment in the region.
This compares to the average across England and Wales of 5,000 home offices, with individuals working from home accounting for around three per cent of the region's employment.
London, the South East and the East of England were found to be home to the majority of home offices, with 64 per cent of the principalities in the top 25 located in these areas. This is despite the fact that the region accounts for only 36 per cent of all Principal Authorities surveyed.
Jim Plunkett-Cole, principal analyst at Smart Growth, commented: "[The findings] begin to help us understand the increasingly important home-based economic functionality of the more rural and residential areas outside of London, and particularly the Home Counties and Shire Counties across England & Wales."
He added that the study provides "strong supportive evidence" of the need for home office support , which could help to maximise their economic contribution. Higher speed broadband, 'virtual' business support services and networking are among the areas of support that could make a real difference to homeworkers.
