UK urged to embrace ‘work from home’ technology

With Gordon Brown set to take over as prime minister within the next few weeks the UK has been urged to embrace the kind of technologies that will allow more people to work from home.

Richard Barrington, head of public policy at Sun Microsystems, has suggested Mr Brown and the rest of the UK population should use some of the latest technologies to make flexible working more common across the country, reports VNUnet.

And with observers still uncertain about how Mr Brown will view the homeworking phenomena, Mr Barrington has made clear that the practice can help ease some of Britain’s environmental and transport-related concerns.

"Whether he recognises it or not, part of Blair’s legacy is ‘broadband Britain’ and Brown has to add a layer of value-added services on top of that," he is quoted as saying.

"Karl Marx wrote ‘from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs’ and technology is the only option out there to make society more inclusive."

Leader of the Conservative Party David Cameron announced recently that, if elected prime minister, he would extend the right to demand flexible working to all parents in the UK.
