Tax deadline approaching

While big employers are slowly catching on to the benefits of allowing people to work from home, the a lot of home workers are self-employed and the deadline for self-employed tax returns is rapidly approaching.

In fact, anyone who hasn't sent their tax return in will need to do so today or tomorrow if they want to avoid the £100 fine that is issued to anyone who doesn't return their form on time.

According to reports from Sky News, many people are cutting things pretty tight when it comes to tax this year. The news agency claimed that although 8.8 million people have filed their returns, a further 1.8 million are still to do so and homeworkers could well be among this number.

Meanwhile, the tax office has noted that more and more people are using the internet to file their returns. In January 2008, just 45.9 per cent of the 9.3 million returns were filed online. But by last January, this figure had risen to 80.9 per cent of 10.5 million returns, signalling changes in people's approach to paperwork and management.

Dealing with tax returns can be time consuming and boring for homeworkers who would rather be getting on with jobs for their clients. But the financial risk of putting things off for too long is too high to ignore.
