Although it is not always easy to find adequate insurance cover when working from home, help can be at hand from brokers and certain insurers.
If you are working from home and have clients visiting you, you may find that your insurance does not give you cover for damage to property or equipment used for business purposes. This is because in the insurance company's view, there is an increased risk of damage due to the additional visitors to your house.
Many insurers nowadays tend to offer ready-made insurance packages to their customers, with little flexibility for varying circumstances. So, looking for quotes online or calling a telesales department to resolve this issue might not get you very far.
There are a number of ways around this problem, however. An insurance broker should be able to explain your circumstances to an insurance company so that the insurer can appropriately assess the risk and offer you cover. In addition, there are a number of established insurance firms such as Axa, Aviva and Allianz who have now developed "office at home" policies to cover those who operate their business from home.
You may not have considered this issue at all up to now but it is certainly one to look into. Make sure also to check the terms of your mortgage and the deeds to your property in case they do not allow home working.
