Allowing employees to work from home or under more flexible circumstances is becoming part of an overall business strategy for an increasing number of companies, it has been claimed.
Ellen Galinsky, president and co-founder of the Families and Work Institute, suggests that home-based working in the US is becoming a more common and accepted feature of the way firms do business.
She told the Hartford Business news provider: "Companies used to think of flexibility as something to give to valued employees.
"It was a favour or accommodation to someone you didn’t want to lose. Now companies are seeing it as a strategic business tool."
The desire for a better work-life balance and concerns about the environment are seen as two of the main reasons why working from home is becoming increasingly popular, the same report suggests.
Meanwhile, a number of congressman have called for America’s federal government to encourage its staff to work from home, according to a recent report in the Washington Post.
