The future of Britain will be partly shaped by the increasing prevalence of home-based workers, according to a new report from Alliance & Leicester.
By 2027, residential properties in the UK will have been adapted to meet the demands of the millions of people avoiding a lengthy commute and opting to operate from their own home, the financial services firm maintains.
The changes in working arrangements will lead to homes being built to make sure Britain’s home-based workforce can operate smoothly and comfortably, the so-called Home of the Future research suggests.
A statement from Alliance & Leicester read: "Computers and televisions will become more interactive, spelling the end of the commute and more people working from home."
"Communities, shops, services and even the relationship with our neighbours could play a far greater part in our daily lives in the absence of work colleagues."
David Cameron, the leader of the Conservative Party, said recently that flexible working options should be made as widely available as possible in the UK.
