Allowing time to spend with family members during the day may improve efficiency for homeworkers, it has been claimed.
Research conducted by Information Strategies (IS) identified family as one of the top ten issues facing those who work from home.
And taking time out of the business day to offer relatives full attention was suggested as a means of combating the potential distraction they could pose.
JoAnn Laing, president and chief executive officer of IS, explained: "Working from home makes for longer business days actually spent in the office space.
"Therefore learning how to deal with daily family issues and running a business at the same time is critical."
Other techniques recommended in the study include keeping a designated work area and computer which are not used by the rest of the family.
Meanwhile, consideration for neighbours is suggested in order to ensure nearby residents do not disrupt the working day.
By minimising outdoor activity, IS claims that homeworkers can keep their neighbours happy and prevent them becoming "difficult and annoying".
IS states that its market insight is intended to provide small businesses with the information required for effective workplace management.
